Nutrient Spotlight – Vitamin D

By in Uncategorized with 0 Comments

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth, normal cell growth, regulation of the immune and nervous systems and even can affect fertility.  We normally get sufficient Vitamin D from sun exposure in the summer months but once the weather becomes cooler and the sun hides away deficiencies can develop.  In children Rickets Disease can occur (bowed legs and knocked knees).  In adults, deficiency can lead to increased bone turnover and osteoporosis.

Research shows that during winter, 50 percent of Australian women have vitamin-D levels that are considered inadequate to prevent osteoporosis.  The best way to identify a deficiency is to have a blood test and if levels are below average nutritional supplementation should commence.  To ensure you are taking the correct dose to reverse this deficiency, please do not hesitate to speak with one of our naturopaths.
