I have been doing a few healthy snacking seminars lately and I have found that people’s ears begin to prick up when I start talking about the 3pm-4pm afternoon energy slump. So many people can relate to this, it is normally the time when you head to the vending machine or social club chocolate box at work or rummage through the cupboards at home. We can find that when we want that quick pick-me-up we tend to head for chocolate, chips, cake, lollies, biscuits, soft drink……high sugar, high carb foods.
Before I list a few healthy snack ideas, I just want to explain what a snack should consist of. It must contain protein as this will keep your hunger satisfied for longer, minimal carbohydrates and a small amount of healthy omega 3 fats. This combination will keep you fuller for longer and reduce the drop in blood sugar that results in the energy slump and consequently the sugar craving.
Healthy snack ideas:
- can of salmon
- hard boiled egg
- vegetable sticks with hummus
- natural yoghurt
- small handful (1/4 cup) raw unsalted nuts – almonds, cashews, walnuts etc
- buckwheat or quinoa cracker with avocado and tomato
Don’t forget, its just a snack! Try to eat a small amount as your next meal may not be that far away. Don’t fill up on your snack.
